How to keep warm with an ice fishing shanty

By Robert B.

No one likes cold feet, especially while ice fishing. Have you ever considered using an ice fishing shanty to shield you from the elements? These are ideal if you have your own, private ice fishing pond. They are very inexpensive to build, but can be rather bulky to move around at times. There are many things you should consider when building an ice fishing shanty, here are just a few:

Have you thought of using a water sealant or treated wood? If you're spending the time building your shanty, build it to last. You can purchase your materials pre-treated and even apply your own water sealant as well.

Of course you don't want your ice fishing shanty to fall over, but many people don't consider this before building theirs. Make sure yours is not too top heavy or to narrow at the base. A lot of this involves simply using your common sense, just follow your gut and you should be safe.

And lastly, never leave it on the ice when you're finished fishing. Although it may be convenient to leave your shanty on the ice when you're fished, this poses many threats. You can easily weaken the ice that the ice fishing shelter is setting on, or even worse, your shanty may collapse into the water. Shanties may also be attractive to children to play in, which is very dangerous with a hole in the ice.

Following some of these tips and advice, your next ice fishing trip should be a blast with a good ice fishing shanty.
