What is the guide's time of experience in the area you'll be hunting in? Give little value to the length of time a guide as been in business, but rather ask how long have they been guiding tours on the land they currently work on.
Are there any taxidermy service available on site? The guides that know elks the best will generally be taxidermists, which demonstrates their knowledge of the animal and the most efficient way to take one down.
How long is the hunting trip and what all is provided? Be sure to consider the facilities you'll be sleeping and eating in, and what, if any food is provided.
And finally, don't forget about the cost of your guide for elk hunting in New Mexico. If the price difference in your top choices is very little, I'd recommend going with the guide you feel most comfortable with. If there is a large price difference and you don't see any justification in them, contact the guide with the higher price and see if he's willing to haggle with you.
By using these guidelines you'll be sure to have a great time elk hunting in New Mexico.
