Are you using the right top trailing dogs for hog hunting?

By Robert B.

There are many qualities that make top trailing dogs for hog hunting, but do you know what they are? If you don't, then you just may be picking the wrong type of dog when you go hog or praire dog hunting. Here are some traits you shouldn't forget:

  • Smell - This is by far the most important trait in dogs for hunting. If you're dog can't smell good or gets false scents, you may need to find a different breed of dog.

  • Pointing ability - How does the dog let you know that its found something? The quieter the method the better, so its not to spook away the hog or other prey when your doing some praire dog hunting.

  • Independence - You need to have a dog that you can trust to let run wild and report back to you when he has found something.

  • Stamina - Just like people, dogs do get tired as well. Good dogs for hog hunting will be able to run longer and faster with less water than other dogs and breeds.

Also don't forget to brainstorm hunting dog names! Try to think of something unique just for your mans best friend.

Before choosing a dog to hunt hogs, ask around and see what your friends and family use. Now I'll leave you with a short list of some good praire dogs for hunting hogs or other prey:

German Pointer (shorthaired longhaired, or wirehaired) Spinone Munsterlander (small or large) Wirehaired Pointing Griffon Pudelpointer
