Praire dog hunting can add a new twist to an old hobby!

By Robert B.

Have you ever considered going praire dog hunting? Well you should! But before you go and get a new prairie dog for hog hunting or anything else, you should at least consider the following:

  • Hunting dog names - It's bad luck to hunt with a dog that doesn't have a name. Think of some good names for your hunting dog before you go out into the field.

  • Stamina - Dogs can get tired out in the field, just like people. The best Prairie hunting dogs can run faster and longer than the other breeds without getting as tired.

  • Independence - Make sure you select a dog that you can trust to leave your side and return to you once he's found a hot scent.

  • Pointing ability - How does your rover let you know he's found something? Look for dogs that let you know quietly, so they're not to spook away your prey.

  • Smell - This is the most important characteristic to consider when you go praire dog hunting. Get a dog that can pick up a scent every time!

Be sure to ask around and see what your friends recommend. Also ask if you can tag along with him and his dog to get a feel for it, you'll be glad you did before you buy your own hunting dog!
