A tip I will let you in on is to check out your state's fishing regulations, look at the minimum length limits on the lakes that you are interested in fishing, and find the fish of your choice. Then out of the keeper limits available, the ones with higher keeper rates are either trying to promote having bigger fish in the future, but most likely, they are trying to keep the big fish in their lake by keeping the length limit higher. So use that as a reference, also there is always word on the street.
Bait shops and fishing stores nearby a lake or river will usually have gossip floating around on the best locations for fresh water fishing. Networking is huge, having friends that give you good tips on what is working and where at is always a plus, but try to do the same for them or you may not be getting tips from them for very much longer. So really the best answer to locations for fresh water fishing is to have an open ear to what is the best place to fish and when.
