All about Arrows, Weight, Spine, Fletching and Vanes for Archers

By Tracker Outdoors

Arrow weight has a great deal to do with the penetration qualities that are inherent in the broadhead. That does not mean that a heavier arrow will always have better penetration. An arrow needs to be "spined" to match a bow. Most compound bows can shoot a lighter arrow than other bows of the same draw weight and retain true flight.

If you have ever watched an arrow as it is released from a compound bow, you can see that the arrow will warp or almost buckle as it is fired and then straighten itself out. So, the initial thrust on a relaxed compound bow is not the value of the full thrust to come. For this reason, the arrow released from a compound bow doesn't need to be as stiff as a standard bows arrow.

Don't confuse spine with weight. It is possible to get heavy spine and lighter weight. A graphite arrow is a good example because it can have a heavy spine (very stiff) but still be very light in weight. Most archers would agree that a heavier arrow will have better penetration. But as the weight of an arrow increases, we must also increase the draw weight of the bow.

The only two fletching materials that I know of are plastic (vanes) or real feathers. The major value of fletching is drag on the back of the arrow. When I started bow hunting, I used plastic mostly because where I bought the arrows that was how the where made. I also thought that plastic would be more durable than feathers. Today I use feathers. I switched to feathers because they seem more forgiving and will collapse in flight just a bit and increase velocity. Also, after switching to feathers, I have not found them any less durable than vanes.

Arrow Nochs

The proper fit of a noch is that when it is seated on the string, the arrow will just hang from the string by its own weight, but is on firm enough so the arrow will not slide on the string.
