A holiday gift of song from your friendly fishing columnist (Curry Coastal Pilot)
Was it me or did Santa Ellis forget to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year in last week’s fishing column? “Tight Lines! just doesn’t cut the mustard this time of the year,” Mrs. Claus reminded me. She also told me that if she heard my traditional “Bite Before Christmas” poem one more time she was going to go out of her mind. “Can’t you do anything different,” she said? “What’s ...

Deer Hunting Shot Placement

When you shoot at a dove with a shotgun, you try to hit the whole critter... but when you're shooting at a deer or any other big game animal, you really need to place your shot properly in order to ensure a clean, humane kill. You should also shoot where the kill zone is the largest - that way, if you should miss the spot, you have still put your bullet (or arrow) into a kill zone. I've spent a lot of time in the woods hunting and learning, and I believe this to be true: Most of the time, the most important piece of my entire deer hunting experience is where I place my shots.

Crappie Fishing At Christmas
I have always fished during Christmas, often spending two weeks at Clark's Hill during the school holidays when I was a teacher and school administrator. There were many good days of fishing and I figured out how to catch a variety of fish. Crappie were a main target. They were fat and healthy and winter was a good time for frying fresh fish as well as filling up the freezer. The patterns I fished may work for you where you fish.
